Lego corner launched at Valhalla Park Library

Two City of Cape Town departments have joined hands to establish a Lego Corner at the Valhalla Park Library. The Library Information Services and the Community Arts and Culture Development departments have collaborated on the establishment of the space. 

The corner will have a variety of Lego building bricks, books, posters, colouring pages and play mats.

These can be used to stimulate creativity, innovation, coding and team building sessions hosted at the library.

The project will link up with other community groups (seniors, women, early childhood teachers) to collaborate on activities with a strong focus on learning through play and Lego serious play principles.

'The corner has the potential to further equip toddlers, youth, jobseekers and library patrons for future opportunities. The benefits of these building blocks cannot be over emphasised. There are the obvious benefits such as improved hand and eye coordination, the development of spatial skills and enhanced fine motor skills.

'Children also learn problem solving skills, how to plan, innovate and social skills such as team work, following instructions and coming up with new ideas,' said Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Patricia van der Ross.

In 2022 a group of 20 early childhood development practitioners received basic Level 1 Lego training and in conjunction with Valhalla Park Library, an unused space was identified to turn into the corner.

The Lego training is a short course which demonstrates how Lego blocks can be used to teach foundational skills to young children.

'I want to encourage our patrons to join the library and make use of this new addition. It's another avenue for our young children to prepare for school and further enhance their education,' said Councillor Patricia van der Ross.
